Individual Work
The individual work for the Facilitation of Online Learning course consisted of discussion boards, creating blogs, and facilitating an online class. Each of these assignments helped me to retain information which I was reading about in the class. During the discussion boards a multitude of areas. I've decided to post one of the discussions I responded to in order for you to have a better understanding of what was discussed online.
Based on what you have experienced as an online learner to date and your experience and/or readings regarding online teaching, what would YOU tell future online teachers and learners about teaching and taking online courses? What do you think are the most significant changes in roles? What have you found easiest to address; what has been the hardest for you? Post you reactions to the "Changing Roles" discussion topic.
Based on my experience as an online learner and based on my readings regarding online teaching I would tell a future online student that it takes a great deal of dedication from the student to login to the course multiple times a week and complete the readings and other assignments. Without dedication it is hard to succeed in an online class because there is not a physical classroom to go to and listen to a lecture. The learner is responsible for turning off the TV or staying at home from a fun day to complete required work on time.
Based on the readings regarding online teaching I would tell a future instructor to plan ahead, stay prepared, never stop learning, respond to students in a timely fashion and give prompt feedback. Since there is so much information to give and instructors need to think of a creative way to present the material online, they must plan ahead to get this done. Being prepared for an online course is very important for both the student and the instructor, but if the instructor is not prepared, the learners will lose motivation. An instructor should always be willing to learn new things, especially because technology is advancing more every day and they need to stay on top of new developments in order to stay prepared to teach online. Responding to students who have questions is important and must be done in a timely manner. This can determine a student decision to stay enrolled in an online class. Providing feedback is very important to me when being graded by an online instructor. I use this feedback to motivate myself to keep going. Even if it is negative feedback, I would like to know if I am completing an assignment incorrectly, and be given an opportunity to correct the mistake.
The most significant changes in roles for an online instructor would have to be from being a lecturer to becoming a guide or a provider of resources. The most significant role for a student would be to learn to problem solve and search for resources for problem solving instead of memorizing facts. I think the easiest for me would be to problem solve instead of memorizing facts because I like things to make since in my everyday life and not to just have to retain information for an exam. I think the hardest thing for me is to be creative. I don’t see myself as a creative person, but I know it is something I can do. I will just have to plan ahead to get the creative juices flowing in my brain.
