Introduction to Online Teaching
Description - The introduction to online teaching course familiarizes students with the technology and communication tools needed, and the success strategies to successfully teach online.
My learning experience - In this class I was able to learn the multiple learning styles of students and how this affected the way in which they learned. This allowed me to understand why I need to provide a multitude of different teaching strategies when developing my study plan to allow my students the opportunity to learn in their own unique style. I also had the opportunity to take the VARK survey to find out my own unique learning style. My scores for VARK were Visual (7) Aural (9) Read/Write (5) and Kinesthetic (7). This meant that I am able to learn in multiple learning styles. This seemed very accurate to me because I often have to talk an assignment out or visually see how someone else is completing it in order to understand how the assignment should come together. I can also learn through simply reading the assignment, but it may take me a little longer without the visuals. Since I was able to learn this about myself, it has helped me with completing assignments more accurately. When learning how to create this ePortfolio, I knew the best way for me to understand would be through video tutorials. Knowing my learning style gives me the upper-hand on my learning.
Some of my other learning experiences included promoting student centered learning and content resources. Promoting student centered learning is important because it allows the student to take responsibility for their learning and also allows the instructor to learn from the student. Some of the skills teachers need to make a student centered environment work are flexibility, imagination, and good time management skills. Content resources are important because there is a wealth of resources available online for an instructor to use. Developing an online course takes imagination, determination, and dedication from the instructor by finding the right course material.
In this class we participated in group work, individual work, and a blog which detailed our learning path.
